Optical Morphologies of Millijansky Radio Galaxies Observed by Hst and in the Vla First Survey

چکیده
We report on a statistical study of the 51 radio galaxies at the millijansky flux level from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters, including their optical morphologies and structure obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. Our optical imaging is significantly deeper (∼2 mag) than previous studies with the superior angular resolution of space-based imaging. We that find 8/51 (16%) of the radio sources have no optically identifiable counterpart to AB∼24 mag. For the remaining 43 sources, only 25 are sufficiently resolved in the HST images to reliably assign a visual classification: 15 (60%) are elliptical galaxies, 2 (8%) are late-type spiral galaxies, 1 (4%) is an S0, 3 (12%) are point-like objects (quasars), and 4 (16%) are merger systems. We find a similar distribution of optical types with measurements of the Sérsic index. The optical magnitude distribution of these galaxies peaks at I ≃ 20.7 ± 0.5 AB mag, which is ∼ 3 mag brighter than the depth of our typical HST field and is thus not due to the WFPC2 detection limit. This supports the luminosity-dependent density evolutionary model, where the majority of faint radio galaxies typically have L-optical luminosities and a median redshift of z ≃ 0.8 with a relatively abrupt redshift cut-off at z & 2. We discuss our results in the context of the evolution of elliptical galaxies and active galactic nuclei. Subject headings: galaxies: starburst — radio continuum: galaxies

A survey of extended radio jets in AGN with Chandra and HST: First Results
We present the first results from an X-ray and optical survey of a sample of AGN radio jets with Chandra and HST. We focus here on the first six sources observed at X-rays, in four of which a bright X-ray jet was detected for the first time. In three out of four cases optical emission from the jet is also detected in our HST images. We compare the X-ray morphology with the radio as derived from...
متن کاملThe Vla Survey of the Chandra Deep Field South. Iv. Source Population
We present a detailed analysis of 256 radio sources from our deep (flux density limit of 42 μJy at the field centre at 1.4 GHz) Chandra Deep Field South 1.4 and 5 GHz VLA survey. The radio population is studied by using a wealth of multi-wavelength information in the radio, optical, and X-ray bands. The availability of redshifts for ∼ 80% of the sources in our complete sample allows us to deriv...
متن کاملVLA survey of the CDFS: the nature of faint radio sources
We present the multiwavelength properties of 266 cataloged radio sources identified with 20 and 6 cm VLA deep observations of the CDFS at a flux density limit of 42 μJy at the field centre at 1.4 GHz. These new observations probe the faint end of both the star formation and radio galaxy/AGN population. X–ray data, including upper limits, turn out to be a key factor in establishing the nature of...
متن کاملA New Complete Sample of Sub-millijansky Radio Sources: An Optical and Near-Infrared Study
The Very Large Array (VLA) has been used in C-configuration to map an area ≃ 0.3 deg 2 at 1.4 GHz with 5σ sensitivities over four equal areas of 0.305, 0.325, 0.380 and 0.450 mJy. Radio properties are presented for 62 detected sources. Deep optical imaging to Gunn r ≃ 25 mag using the Hale 5-m telescope covering ≃ 0.21 deg 2 is reported for a subset of 43 sources. Archival J, H and K-band photo...
متن کاملEvidence for Extended, Obscured Starbursts in Submm Galaxies
We compare high-resolution optical and radio imaging of 12 luminous submillimeter (submm) galaxies at a median z = 2.2 ± 0.2 observed with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the MERLIN and VLA radio interferometers at comparable spatial resolution, ∼ 0.3 (∼ 2 kpc). The radio emission is used as a tracer of the likely far-infrared morphology of these dusty, luminous galaxies. In ∼30% of the sample...
